KIOSK
International - Toronto, Ontario
There
is nothing more beautiful than Niagara Falls on a sunny winter day. A
group of 20 excited KIOSK students had their own bus trip to see one of
the wonders of the natural world. They stopped at Niagara-on-the-Lake,
a small historic town for a stroll down the main street of inviting shops
and restaurants. They won't tell me how much they won or lost at the Niagara
casino. At the winery, the students tried Ontario ICE WINE which is made
from grapes frozen on the vine. It is a sweet and delicious treat.
In
the KIOSK classrooms, students are working hard to obtain high TOEFL scores
because it is time for university applications. They study in the advanced
level with a special writing option then, once a week try a practice test
on the computer. Congratulations to the students who have received admission.
Other students want to speak English fluently for travel or for their
work. KIOSK's listening and conversation classes are interesting and help
to develop confidence. After class, social gatherings help students feel
comfortable speaking English.

Canadian as a Second
Language Institute - Vancouver, British Columbia
A record-breaking month!
March
was CSLI’s busiest month ever, with a record number of students from over
20 countries. With the warm Spring weather and so many students here for
a short period of time, we made it part of our curriculum for all classes
to go on outings. Charlie’s Chocolate Factory and the BC Sports Hall of
Fame were among the popular tours that allowed students to meet Canadians
while learning about local businesses (and tasting some delicious chocolate).
April promises to be another warm month, and out-of-class activities will
continue to play an important role in the students’ education.

CSLI
continues charity work
CSLI’s involvement in helping Sri Lanka raise money after the tsunami
continues with an exciting project. We are helping distribute and sell
Friendship Bracelets that were made by Sri Lankans to help raise money,
100% of which will go directly to the people of that country. Vancouver’s
school boards have taken CSLI’s lead and will be selling them in their
schools. CSLI students have been helping package, sell, and buy these
bracelets in an effort to bring revenue to those in need.

Study
Abroad Canada - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Spring
is just around the corner…and the maple syrup will soon be flowing! Students
and staff are waiting for warm days and cold nights so we can visit a
maple syrup farm and taste some sweet treats. Yummy!
We are also planning for summer weather when bicycling
on the Confederation Trail will be possible. The Confederation Trail is
a 275 km trail that was developed on the abandoned railway lines. It goes
from one end of Prince Edward Island to the other. This year, some energetic
students and staff are planning to cycle across the Island! Please say
tuned for our progress.

College - Calgary, Alberta
 The
great weather we experienced the February has continued into March. The
first two weeks of March recorded highs between 12°C and 20°C!
Spring is here! The students this month have done a variety of activities.
The students started the month going bowling at Chinook Centre newly renovated
bowling alley. The next Friday they played several different board games.
Everyone was excited to attend the Calgary Auto and Truck show. They enjoyed
looking and sitting in all new cars and trucks. For St. Patrick’s Day
we celebrated with Barbara’s homemade Irish Potato Soup. Students enjoyed
playing Badminton at the Talisman Centre last Friday. This week to celebrate
Easter the students are painting Ukrainian Easter Eggs.
Mari’s class had some fun activities in class this
month. The students had to use their senses of smell, touch and taste
to figure out 20 different spices. Aline was the winner of the Spice competition
getting 17 out of 20 spices correct. They also learnt how to follow instructions
in order by making Chocolate crepes with strawberries and whip cream.
They successfully followed the recipe and with their French Canadian classmate
Paul as their cook the crepes were delicious.

Interlangues Language
School - Ottawa, Ontario
 We
took advantage of a sunny and warm Saturday this month to try out skiing
and sledding. For many of our students it was the first time sledding,
so as you can imagine, they were a little bit afraid to go down the hill
with only a piece of plastic under them! By the end of the afternoon though,
the students did not want to leave! It was a great afternoon, which we
look forward to repeating. Interlangues’ ESL Department organized a ski
trip. Our students enjoyed the day in the mountains and the with the friendly
ski instructors. Some chose to snowboard instead and it was the first
time for some students. After a morning of practicing on the bunny hill,
we tackled the big hill after lunch. Most people slept on the way home!
Interlangues is a community-minded company, participating
in fundraisers for various charities and encourages its employees to help
out as well. We will help students interested in volunteering find a suitable
placement. Every once in a while, we are able to combine our students’
interests with a truly worthy cause. This month a student accompanied
a teacher to volunteer with stroke patients who have language impairments.
For a nurse, this was an enriching combination of work and language skills.
We look forward to offering our students more opportunities like this
one.
