KIOSK
International - Toronto, Ontario
January in Toronto
The
air is chilly, but our hearts are warm at KIOSK. Skating parties and ski
trips are part of the fun in January. Our young Korean students attending
winter camp spent a day at the Zoo - the polar bears were active but the
gorilla had moved inside. We celebrate birthdays and special holidays
such as Eid for the students from Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Our world is
full of a variety of climate and temperature extremes, animals, cultures
and holidays. At an international school in a multicultural city like
Toronto, we are aware of the wonder of diversity.
Academic Success
Some
students reach their goal of admission to George Brown College or York
University after achieving a high TOEFL score or Grade 12 graduation earned
at KIOSK. Others return home with TOEIC scores high enough to ensure a
new job. Following a term in the English for Business class, students
report they feel confident to apply for a promotion. Our aim at KIOSK
is to support our learners with teaching strategies that help them succeed
in their chosen areas. KIOSK congratulates all our students who have reached
their goals.

Interlangues Language
School - Ottawa, Ontario
It
is certainly winter now in the nation’s capital! Students are experiencing
a beautiful, cold and sunny winter. With this stimulating weather, we
have been very active! There have been many parties and pub nights to
chase away the cold. This time of year also signals the opening of the
Rideau Canal,
the longest skating rink in the world, stretching over 7 km through the
heart of the city. Enjoying hot chocolate is a tradition of this skating
activity. Many of our students have found that skating to school is a
good way to wake up in the morning as well! There are many places around
our region for skiing and snowboarding, two very popular winter activities
that our students and teachers enjoy.
Our new conversation workshops began this month,
on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with discussion groups. The teacher will assign
certain topics for each class, and the students will discuss our debate
that topic. Another new program is the Business English in the mornings.
This course gives our International students a chance to mix with Canadian
students who are studying at Interlangues sent by the Federal government
of Canada. We are busy making plans for Black History month, check with
us in February!

Canadian as a Second
Language Institute - Vancouver, British Columbia
In
response to the tragic tsunami in South Asia, CSLI has done a great deal
to help with the relief effort. Owner and Director Lawrence Keenan flew
to Sri Lanka to help prepare for the arrival of incoming medical and aide
teams. His reports from the area were covered on CNN and Global News.
The Keenans and CSLI will be helping an orphanage in Kalmunai, Sri Lanka,
while continuing to assist communities in efforts to rebuild by connecting
them with Canadian business and charities.
Our returning special guest student, Harumi Kurihara,
the Japanese TV cooking and design guru, hosted a gala fundraiser at CSLI
to help the effort. The event was attended by the Japanese Consulate and
staff., local businesses, and the international media. Harumi donated
copies of her new English cookbook to raise money, and gave a cooking
demonstration. The evening included a silent auction which raised thousands
of dollars for the orphanage.
Special thanks to major contributors British Airways and Alaska Airways.

Snow Once Every Eight Years
As well as welcoming students from Bbrazil, Mexico, Switzerland, Japan,
and Korea, Canadian College also started the new year by greeting snow
(and snowballs) to our normally mild, ocean side courtyard. However, the
unexpected cold weather did not stop our students from enjoying the free
friday afternoon activities which included playing tennis on an indoor
court, enjoying a fun game of basketball, feeding seals at the Oak Bay
Marina, shooting billiards, and sipping and munching on hot tea and a
warm scone at a local tea room. Thanks to our university student volunteers
for making each activity so much fun.
February Learning Mixed
With Fun
CCBL looks forward to February when our calendar is filled with more then
the annual Valentine’s day and Chinese New Year celebrations. We will
also have students going to Stelly’s High School to participate in a language
exchange class, socializing with local seniors, skiing at Mt. Washington,
and taking an overnight sightseeing trip to Vancouver. All of this, plus
a number of great friday activities to choose from! Please contact admissions@canadiancollege.ca

 Educere
International College (EIC) is pleased to announce that our Business English
Program is Expanding! EIC has enjoyed tremendous success with our intensive
8 week Business English Communication and Culture (BECC) course as well
as our Internship Program. Starting January 31, 2005 will be offering
3 new courses to our Business English Development Program: Business
English Foundations, Technical and Report Writing, and Business
English Case Studies. The Business English Foundations is a solid course
that introduces students to the world of business. It is designed for
those students who have no knowledge of business or Business English,
have intermediate English skills, and want to have an enjoyable yet effective
introduction to relevant and contemporary material. The Technical
and Report Writing course looks at not only technical documents
like memos, faxes and email but also examines the art of report writing.
Today’s employers are demanding more than just good communication skills;
they are looking for people who can creatively apply their knowledge to
real world situations. As a result, EIC will be offering Business
English Case Studies course that takes the knowledge gained from
personal experience and our BECC course and applies it to real issues
faced by businesses in today’s global environment. Please contact us for
more detailed information on our new programs.
We will be welcoming new students from Germany,
Libya, Korea, Japan and Spain next month.

Study
Abroad Canada - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Happy
2005 from Study Abroad Canada! Students welcomed in the new year by attending
traditional levees in Charlottetown. Levees are social events hosted by
prominent members of the community. Two of the many levees were hosted
by the Mayor of Charlottetown and the Premier of Prince Edward Island.
In January, students enjoyed preparing an international meal together.
The food included fish chowder, a Japanese soup, a Colombian dish, a Chilean
dish and a birthday cake for two students with birthdays this month. Students
also enjoyed a sleigh ride, followed by hot chocolate and cookies.
Upcoming free Friday afternoon activities include
tobogganing and decorating heart-shaped Valentine's cakes which they can
take home...yummy! Study Abroad Canada is offering a special one or two-week
Valentine's program. Sample activities include making heart-shaped quilts,
making homemade chocolates, basket weaving and decorating Easter eggs.
We hope you will come enjoy a romantic Valentine's day program with us!
