CanadaWide February, 2005 Our Winter Special - One Week FREE!

Canadian as a Second Language Institute - Vancouver, British Columbia
CSLI's monthly contest this month was a public speaking competition. Students from all levels prepared a 3-minute speech on a topic of their choice. Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced students each had their own contest, and the winners presented their speeches to the whole school. As public speaking is seen as challenging by most people, our students have certainly demonstrated their English mastery by being able to do so in a second language!

And the winner is...CSLI's annual Oscar Graduation party took place with the red carpet rolling out and students presenting awards to fellow students and staff in true Hollywood style. The previous day, we held a flag-raising for Libya. CSLI's population of Libyan students has increased recently, and we were honored to add their flag to our lobby, as well as have a beautiful presentation of Libyan food and music for all to enjoy.

Study Abroad Canada - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Students and staff of Study Abroad Canada enjoyed decorating their own heart-shaped Valentine’s cakes recently. Students used their artistic talents to produce yummy-looking cakes. Students took the cakes home to share with host families and friends. It was a delicious activity! Everyone will remember Valentine’s Day when they received a beautiful red rose from the directors and staff of Study Abroad Canada.

Upcoming activities include touring a maple sugar farm, ice fishing Easter egg decorating, and tubing. Tubing is sliding down a hill on the soft inner tube of a huge tire.

KIOSK International - Toronto, Ontario

KIOSK students love to have fun. During these winter months, we are playing indoor soccer, indoor beach volleyball, going to clubs, as well as skiing (outdoors!). Indoor soccer is everyone's favourite activity because we are a real team which competes in the Ontario Indoor Soccer League. The team is made up of KIOSK students and members of the KIOSK community who look handsome in their team uniforms... So far so good! The team has won one of its two games and is looking more and more like a cohesive unit, which come to think of, is very much like the KIOSK family… a cohesive unit.

Our students also make up an international family. We love to celebrate everyone's holidays. The biggest festival in February is the Lunar New Year which is a major event in many countries. In Toronto, students enjoy watching street parades with the Chinese dragon going into the shops. We had a party at school, went to a restaurant for a special meal then to a huge New Year celebration in the International Trade Centre. Talking with new friends while participating in new cultural experiences is a great way to practice speaking English.

Educere International College - Calgary, Alberta
We have been experiencing extremely warm spring like weather this February. The sky is clear and blue, the sun is shining and we are forecasted to be above 10°C by the end of the week.

This month we have done a variety of activities. We went for a pre-Valentines tour of the Bernard Callebaut Chocolate Factory. Everyone enjoyed the free chocolate that they received during the tour and Mari purchased some additional chocolates for the students to share. She was extremely popular at this point. Next, Mari and the students went skating at the Olympic Oval. There were a few crashes, falls and bruises but everyone had a great time. We are all trying to be healthy and remain active over the winter months and yoga is the perfect way to achieve this. This month we had a yoga instructor come to the school and show our students and teachers the basic yoga positions. The event was so popular that next month we are planning to do it again. We celebrated Valentines Day with a chocolate fondue.

Canadian College of Business and Language - Victoria, BC
Record sunshine in Victoria
The flowers and Cherry trees are all in blossom just in time for Victoria’s annual February Flower Count. The city of Victoria is having record breaking hours of sunshine this February and Canadian College students are enjoying every minute of it! We’ve hosted an international Potluck lunch, gone skating, had lunch in China Town, played bowling, and toured the wonderful Royal British Columbia Museum. And, every chance our students get, they are taking their breaks in Bastion Square sitting next to yellow Daffodils and enjoying our wonderful view of Victoria Harbour.

CCBL students out in the community
Our February programs included CCBL students going out into the community for a number of classes. They made cultural presentations at Selkirk Montessori School to sixty grade one and two students, socialized with local seniors, and participated in a Language Exchange class at Stelly’s High School. Starting February 29th, students in our Internship Program will begin the work component of their program and join the staff of a variety of local businesses for a three-week job placement. Contact Admissions@CanadianCollege.ca for complete program information or register on-line at

Interlangues Language School - Ottawa, Ontario
February is Black History Month and as such we have had numerous activities around this theme. At the beginning of the month the students researched and presented Black Canadians who have made significant contributions to Canadian society. It was a week-long project incorporating all skills. Students will also attend a presentation about Black culture given here at our school. We are very proud to introduce this topic and history to our students! With Winterlude coming to an end this month, the next big activity will be our annual trip to the Sugarbush, where maple syrup is made. Be sure to check back next month to find out more about this exciting activity!

We are pleased to announce that our Business English classes are going very well. We have had the opportunity to introduce students from abroad, interested in business, to Canadian business people who are also studying English. It is a wonderful networking opportunity for both our International students and our domestic students. Another reminder as well, that you can finish your course off with a TOEIC® test, taken on site at our school. Stay tuned for information regarding our summer programs, in the coming months!
