Study
Abroad Canada - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
May is just around the corner and that
means lobster fishing season is here. Did you know that the largest lobster
ever caught was 42.4 pounds? It was caught in 1934 and was probably at
least 100 years old. In May, students will be treated to a lobster lunch
as one of their Friday afternoon activities. In Prince Edward Island,
lobster is often served hot or cold with Island-grown mussels, potato
salad, coleslaw, and fresh rolls. Many people dip their lobster in melted
butter, or butter with garlic. Students, please bring your appetites.
In early May, students will try to catch the largest
fish at the third annual fishing derby. This fishing competition will
take place at Ben’s Lake in Eastern PEI. The lucky student who catches
the largest fish wins a prize. Last year, the largest fish was bigger
than 2.5 kilos and that’s not a fish story!

Great weather continues
The
weather has been stellar in recent weeks in Vancouver, with beautiful
sunshine and soaring temperatures. Students have been taking advantage
of this even during class time, as teachers organized outings throughout
the city. When Fashion was the topic, students took up the role of Fashion
Police, patrolling Robson Street to comment on fashion hits and faux-pas
along this cosmopolitan street. When studying Art, classes went to local
galleries to look at contemporary art and Native traditional art. Our
sports activities after school are also getting more occupied as we move
towards a hot summer!
Trivia Contest
CSLI’s contest this month was a new addition to our repertoire: a Vancouver
Trivia Contest! The format was different than usual: teams of students
had to tour the school to find information about Vancouver, and then present
their answers to the judges. The process helped them learn more about
the city in which they are studying and to practice their reading comprehension
and teamwork skills. Congratulations to Manuela Lenz from Switzerland
and Kwan Seok Kim from Korea, who together made up the winning team. Thanks
to Heather for organizing such a great contest!

KIOSK International
- Toronto, Ontario
On
April 15th , KIOSK students had a fantastic opportunity to experience
Canadiana by traveling to Montreal, Quebec. The students visited French-Canada,
enjoying the Quebecois culture. They got a taste of the province's history
by visiting Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Jacque Cartier observatory.
Montreal has great nightlife and there was dancing until late at night
at the Crescent Street night club district
and in the Latin Quarter. We also walked up Mount-Royal,
and after a long walk enjoyed the fine places to eat that the city has
to offer. We had a blast, and
got to experience what Canadian multiculturalism is all about.
Studying at KIOSK is
a great way to start your academic career in Canada. Begin with ESL and
specialize in English for Academic Preparation (EAP), preparing you for
the TOEFL test. After, transfer to a College or University. If you are
15-20 years old, take one or two years of High School credits at KIOSK.
Study Math, Physics, Economics, ESL, Grade 11 & 12 English, and write
the Ontario Literacy Test. When you have enough official credits from
KIOSK, you are prepared for post-secondary studies at a College or University
anywhere in Canada. Whatever your choice, KIOSK has guidance counselors
and programs to assure your success.

College - Calgary, Alberta
Spring is here! We have been enjoying wonderful weather this April, with
temperatures around 15 °C - 20 °C.
 The
students this month have done a variety of activities. They started the
month by going to a movie at Eau Claire Market. Next, they experienced
the thrill of a real Canadian sport, when La Dawn Funk, one time world
junior champion, took them curling at the Calgary Curling Club. It was
the first time curling for most students and yet they quickly learned
the techniques and by the end of the day were able to have fun playing
a game against each other. Back this month by popular demand was yoga.
The students that participated in the one and half hour yoga/pilates class
were definitely tired when they finished and some were still complained
of aches and pains on Monday. Mari took the students to Chinook Centre
to test bowling skills. Everyone had a great time, although there was
some debate over whether 5 pin bowling or 10 pin bowling was more fun.
The students will be attending the Glenbow Museum this week. The current
exhibit is Our River Journey of the Bow. It is an exhibit all about the
Bow River, its history and significance in Alberta.

Hill Park, Volleyball, Tea at the James Bay Tea House, and a trip to the

What
do most people think of when asked about Canada? Maple syrup!! This month
we went to the “sugar bush.” This is where sap is harvested and then made
into maple syrup. Every year we enjoy this Canadian custom. This year
the students had a hayride and enjoyed the time in the country, with the
fresh air! Hockey lockout? The professionals may not be playing, but that
doesn’t mean there’s no hockey in Ottawa! Students have had opportunities
to watch Canada’s favourite game live with one their teachers, a big hockey
fan!
University students are finishing up their exams, and high school students
are beginning to dream of summer. Have you decided what you are doing
this year? Spending a summer abroad is a wonderful opportunity to brush
up on your English skills and gain the life experience you can only get
from living in another country. Classes are filling up quickly for the
summer. We look forward to seeing you amongst our new arrivals soon! We
offer programs for everyone from the age of 10. Our children’s camps and
teen programs are the most popular, along with Intensive and Business
English. Call us today to find out how to give your child (or yourself)
the experience of a lifetime!
