Terry Fox Auction and Run for Cancer!
This year is CSLI's 10th year raising money for the cure for cancer. We raised exactly $700 at September's auction, which gives us a 10-year total of $10890. Special thanks to our homestay families, staff, and students who participated in the auction. The Terry Fox Run was held Sunday Sept 19th all over Canada. Our staff and a few brave students showed up to run or walk the 10-km race. Many of our staff and students won door prizes, but most importantly we are getting closer to finding a cure for cancer.

Putting on a new face...
CSLI is continually adding new curriculum topics to our Practical English discussion themes. This month saw the introduction of the topics 'The Body' and 'Heroes'. In order to demonstrate the new North American trend towards 'makeovers' - when people change their physical appearance through exercise and new fashion styling - CSLI offered one lucky student a free makeover! Students had to nominate their classmates by writing about why their friend should receive this gift. We had two lucky winners: teacher Heather MacDonald joined student Mihoko Nakatani for an incredible day. Both were whisked away from the school on Thursday morning and brought at the end of the school day to model their new clothes and hairstyles for the school! The 'reveal' was met by screams and cheers - they both look FABULOUS!

Ramadan
The rising of the full moon on October 14th marks the beginning of the RAMADAN month for Moslems throughout the world. During this time people fast every day until sunset, pray, think about peace, and renew their commitment to their faith. KIOSK wishes all of its Moslem students from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Libya and other countries a happy and peaceful RAMADAN. At the end of Ramadan comes EID, a time to celebrate with friends and family while enjoying traditional food, drink and music. Please come and join the staff and students of KIOSK for an EID party!

Fall Colours
One of the most beautiful times in Canada is fall. All the trees show off their beautiful colours. October is also time for fall harvest and eating traditional Canadian foods like corn, squash and apples. Fall is definitely a time you want to be in Canada for! At the end of October comes Halloween - out come the ghosts, witches, the sweet candies, parties and lots of fun! At KIOSK, we will have a pumpkin carving contest to see who can make the greatest pumpkin of all time.

Educere International College - Calgary, Alberta
The students at Educere International College have had a great month. We have several different nationalities this month including Brazilian, Mexican, French, Korean, Swiss, Slovakian, Japanese, Saudi Arabian, and Vietnamese. Our renovations are taking longer than expected but we are almost finished. Please check out our website as we have added a Czech translation this month. We now have a total of 11 Languages on our website!

This month's excursion was hiking up Sulfur Mountain in Banff. Barbara joined the students on this excursion and had a good laugh when Daniel (who had never been to Sulfur Mountain before) insisted that he knew a shortcut straight up the mountain. Several students decided to follow Daniel up the mountain and eventually back down and then back up the pathway. When they finally made it up to the top Barbara and Kelly had been waiting for over half hour. We also explored Chinatown and had Dim Sum for lunch. Last week, Patrick joined the students and went ice skating at the Olympic Oval. There were a few falls and bruises but considering none of them had been on ice skates before they did great. We had two student dinners this month one Italian and the other Thai. Next Friday the students are going to see the play "Hearts and Souls" at Lunchbox Theatre.

Interlangues Language School - Ottawa, Ontario
Many of our students want to know the word for "leaf viewing" because they have a single word for it in their language. Unfortunately, English has no word for this activity, which is odd because "leaf viewing" is a very popular and fun event in a temperate climate such as Ottawa. October is a personal favourite of many of the teachers because it means field trip to Gatineau Park. On this trip we take a walk through the fall foliage on one of the many trails in the park. This year we also had a tour of the Mackenzie King estate, the home of a former Canadian prime minister. It also means preparing for the annual Halloween party when students and teachers have the opportunity to dress up and share their favourite ghost stories.

We are pleased to announce that our writing workshop is going strong with both international and domestic business students. This workshop gives the student the opportunity to receive one-on-one teacher time, and thus an individualized lesson plan. Thanks to our teacher Dave for making this class such a success!

POINT3 Language Center! - Montreal, Quebec

Apples abound in Quebec... And there are so many more varieties than just your standard MacIntosh apple! We made some apple crisp here at POINT3 - in the microwave. You don't even need an oven!

Hike on Mont-Royal: Montreal is blessed with a mountain right in its midst. We will go to the top of Mont-Royal in a couple of week-ends and walk along its beautiful trails. With a picnic lunch and a bit of cooperation from Mother Nature on the weather side, it's a perfect way to spend an autumn day

The Chinese Lanterns are back again, illuminating the Botanical Gardens in all their splendor. This year's theme is the Temple of Heaven. We will be going on an evening later on this month, and will be sure to take a look at all the decorated Halloween pumpkins as well.

Victoria is the only stop in Canada, one of only a limited 11-city North American tour for this 3,000 year old collection from the times of great pyramids and Cleopatra. The works comprise a wide variety of materials including stone, ivory, terracotta, wood, papyrus, glass and gold - the metal of the pharaohs. For more information about including this once in a lifetime tour into your program, contact us at:

12 months of Summer, no Winter??
With the mildest climate in Canada, Victoria's out-door adventure abounds year-round. Victoria receives an average of 2,185 hours of sunshine per year and receives almost half the rain of Vancouver and Seattle. Constant offshore breezes keep our days from becoming too hot and evenings cool. As the capital city of BC, Victoria offers superb culture, entertainment and education. What a great place to prepare for High School in Canada. Let us introduce you to our famous High School Preparation Program with start dates this January through to April 2005. Click:
