Second Language Institute - Vancouver, BC
Communications
Contest
All students did a great job in the contest that focused on improving
listening and articulation skills. Students needed to be especially
conscious of their pronunciation, word choice and listening comprehension
as they described and replicated abstract drawings, summarized the details
of video clips and took dictation from their partner. Congratulations
to our communication contest winners: Ana Luisa from Mexico and Ana
Carolina from Brazil!
Winter Wonderland
Graduation Party
CSLI held the January graduation ceremonies in a white paradise at Mount
Seymour. In addition to saying goodbye to our graduating students we
played a variety of Canadian snow games. There was snowshoeing, a snowman
building competition, snow pictionary, winter charades, snowball fights
and lots of hot chocolate! Special congratulations to Pablo Urquieta
from Chile, winner of the coveted Student of the Month prize of a four-week
scholarship.

Corporate Culture
beyond the Oil and Gas Sector
After working exceptionally hard on Don's business assignments this
month, our trip to the Big Rock Brewery was refreshing! Barbara, our
Principal, took us in the "school bus", though Glade, our
speaking and listening instructor, had promised to drive us. Was it
really because Barbara is the insured and designated driver or because
Glade likes Big Rock beer too much?
On this excursion, we were able to put into practice
all our recently acquired knowledge about marketing and growth strategies,
but we could really learn something after trying some handcrafted and
flavorful beer. Since then, our English skills have also become more
effective! Cheers! This is teaming building and organizational development
at its best.
We were just thinking, are there any wineries
to investigate next month?

KIOSK International
- Toronto, Ont
Winter
in Toronto is always warm at KIOSK. On January 21, KIOSK students all
joined in to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Students decorated a tree
and made traditional foods from China, Viet Nam and Korea. Some of the
students put on a dance show and soon everyone was dancing! Next month
our Muslim students will celebrate their New Year. Look for pictures
in next month's CanadaWide newsletter.
One of the most important differences at KIOSK
is the variety of students that we have. At present we have 25% from
Viet Nam, 20% form Saudi Arabia, 15% from Korea, 15% from Mexico, 10%
from Turkey, 10% from Japan and the rest come from China, France, Germany,
Iran, Switzerland, Brazil and Argentina! Variety is the spice of life
- and it helps students with our English Only policy at the school.

Interlangues Language Center - Ottawa,
Ont
Exciting
news! On March 1st, 2004 the English Department will be moving to a
bigger and better campus in the heart of downtown Ottawa. The new campus
will be close to several shopping malls, movie theatres and a variety
of restaurants. The students will have full access to all the major
bus routes from the new location. The new location is 130 Albert Street,
suite 710. Interlangues' new location is pleased to offer students a
computer lab, game room, small library, bigger student lounge, kitchen
and quiet study area.
In other news, our new conversation program has
proven very successful. Many new students have come in requesting it
specifically. We also look forward to introducing our new Working Holiday
English program. For more information on this and other programs, please
contact our registrar, Nina Maimone.

Hollywood Anybody
Ted
Battryn, Program Support Manager, leads a group of international students
on a tour of our Film Studio and Film Program facilities. During February,
March and April, students will start their film industry terminology
training combined with English Conversation in order to prepare for
entry into our one year Filmmaking Diploma program. Start dates for
the Filmmaking programs are September and October 2004.
Finally, Snow in Victoria
The last time in snowed in Victoria was 1996 so you can imagine what
students thought when they woke up to fresh powder on the ground. That's
right, Victoria's best kept secret is that we have no snow during winters!
We are sorry to report that the snow only lasted 5 days and is now gone.
Flowers and trees are now budding and we are enjoying the best weather
of any city in Canada. Come to Victoria, enjoy the sunshine and smell
the flowers.
